After two decades of dedicated service to Colorado State University, including nearly 13 years with the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories (VDL), Janice Inman Leflet begins a well‑earned retirement at the end of this month.
Inman Leflet began her CSU career on Main Campus, then moved to the Department of Clinical Sciences in 2011. In 2013, she had the opportunity to move to the VDL in grants financial management, ultimately transitioning to the role of business officer, where her impact quickly became foundational to the lab’s success.
“Janice provided leadership during years of growth and increasing administrative complexity,” said Dr. Kristy Pabilonia, executive director, Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories. “She found ways to make new regulations workable for us and helped educate the team.”
According to Pabilonia, one of Inman Leflet’s lasting and meaningful contributions was establishing the operational capacity to bring the VDL accounts receivable system in-house. This move was critical to improving efficiencies, and most importantly enhancing client services.
She also played a critical role in supporting major increases in grant funding and COVID testing related revenue. And on the flip side, she helped balance budgets during challenging times.
Her ability to see the big picture while staying grounded in day‑to‑day realities made her an invaluable partner to teams across the lab.
“Janice has been a great mentor and an incredible resource of information,” said Tina Kane, client services and operations manager. “Her knowledge and experience will be hard to replace!”
Inspiring others
Beyond her technical expertise, Inman Leflet’s positivity and genuine love for her work set the tone for those around her. Her can‑do attitude, paired with a commitment to continuous improvement, inspired others to do their best work.
“Janice is highly dedicated to the lab,” said Pabilonia. “She cares immensely about our work, our people, and our successes.”
Spreading joy
In addition to her dedication, Inman Leflet is known for bringing joy into the workplace. Her bright and cheery personality, wonderful laugh, and great sense of humor made every day better. Her flair for fashion and a love of shopping meant she always arrived in fun outfits that added color and personality to the lab.
“It’s great to get to work with someone every day who loves their job,” said Pabilonia.
Inman Leflet was recently recognized by the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences with the Living Our Values award, which honored her leadership strengths, and in particular her ability to see all sides of a conversation, listen openly, and create space for diverse voices to be heard.
Inman Leflet leaves a legacy of leadership, kindness, and impact that will continue to shape the VDL for years to come. The lab and the Veterinary Health System are grateful for her service, her mentorship, and the many ways she impacted operations and service excellence.
“I’ll just miss all of her,” said Kane.
