Stallion management

Seasonal stallion management is a highlight of our stallion service offerings. We can “stand” or house up to six stallions at our facility during the breeding season, as well as manage contracts for frozen semen banked from stallions that will be busy performing or deceased stallions.

Ideally, mare owners should have stallion(s) selected and all stallion contracts completed, fees paid, and contracts submitted to the appropriate personnel prior to arrival at the Adams Equine Reproduction Center. Some mares arrive at our facility in estrus and are ready to be bred soon after arrival. We do not want to miss an opportunity to breed the mare waiting on paperwork.

Vaccinations

Before arriving at the Adams Equine Reproduction Center, please ensure your horse is current on all vaccinations:

Mare and stallion vaccinations

• Eastern/western/Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis
• Equine herpesvirus (rhinopneumonitis)
• Equine influenza
• Rabies (recommended in Larimer County, CO)
• Tetanus
• West Nile virus

Pregnant mare vaccinations

• Equine herpesvirus (rhinopneumonitis) at 5, 7, and 9 months
• Equine rotavirus at 8, 9, and 10 months
• Rabies and 7-way booster (4-6 weeks before due date) that includes:
  • Eastern/western/Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis
  • Equine herpesvirus (rhinopneumonitis)
  • Equine influenza
  • Tetanus
  • West Nile virus

Your horse also needs a current Coggins test within 12 months and, depending on your state, a brand inspection and/or a health certificate may be needed for travel across state lines.

Contracts and forms

We ask that you have your current Adams Equine Reproduction Center contract completed and returned to our office by mail/email/fax – including feeding instructions and any special requests – at least 24 hours before your appointment. You should also make sure your deposit has been paid in advance for your service.

If you are planning for mare management at the Equine Reproduction Laboratory, it is also helpful if your stallion contract(s) are completed, returned and paid in full in advance of your breeding timeline. Make sure you have a credit card on file and have the appropriate information for semen shipments.

Important Management Dates

• Aug. 1: End-of-season mare management
• Dec. 1: Begin light therapy wherever your mare resides for early breeding/foaling management. This is not required but is effective for starting earlier in the breeding season.
• Jan. 6: Mares accepted for light therapy and foaling mare drop off begins. As a reminder, foaling mares should arrive no more than 2 weeks before their due date. We recommend they arrive 7-10 days before their due date unless there is cause for concern.
• Feb. 1: On-farm mare management begins
• July 1: End of on-site embryo transfers

To streamline these processes and ensure consistency when Adams Equine Reproduction Center staff get involved, our specialists provide step-by-step instructions that horse owners can provide to their veterinarian if necessary.
