Starting Sept. 15, CSU Equine Podiatry expands to three clinic days with Dr. Carlos Carvajal, offering specialized hoof care, therapeutic shoeing, and hands-on training for students.

Beginning Sept. 15, the CSU Equine Podiatry service will hold clinics three days a week, with the arrival of equine podiatrist Dr. Carlos Carvajal, who joins CSU from Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky.

“Having Dr. Carvajal here will allow a lot more flexibility for us and for the other services like surgery or sports medicine – whoever needs it will be available to consult and it will allow us to see a lot more clients,” said Ashley Echevarria, clinical coordinator.

The Equine Podiatry service launched in July of 2024, with a focus on education, clinical services and research.

“People say that horses have five hearts: One is in their body and four are on the ends of their limbs. Horses’ feet are just so important,” Echevarria said.

For clients, it means greater access and flexibility with appointment times. “CSU can offer something that is very specialized,” Echevarria said.

“Now we have a specialty service that can address the medical problems related to the foot but can also do the therapeutic shoeing as well.”

For students, the service gives them a chance to learn an essential part of horse health.

“Having the opportunity to learn podiatry is going to help change the reality that new vets are facing when they get out of school. We want to provide them with exceptional knowledge and training about the foot, so they succeed in the field when facing foot problems,” Carvajal said. “At the podiatry service, we also want to support the veterinarian and farrier community by serving as a referral source for their difficult cases and opening our service to all of them.”
